⨂ ADULTS - Hercules Rhino Beetle, (Dynastes hercules lichyi)
Common name - Hercules Rhinoceros Beetle
Scientific name - Dynastes hercules lichyi
The listing is for 1x, adult beetle, of the largest beetle species in the world, where the current world record specimen has been measured at just over 180mm.
Like many members of the rhino & stag beetle families, males sport impressive horns used in wrestling matches with rivals, whereas females are hornless.
These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from Colombia in South America.
This is a different subspecies of the normally available Hercules Rhinoceros Beetle, which is more uncommonly kept in the UK. While almost reaching the same size, the wings are much lighter in colour than the normal Hercules and has fewer brown spots.
Like many members of the rhino/stag beetle families, the males of this species possess large horns/mandibles used in wrestling matches with rival males, while females lack these structures. The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood.
